Abstract
The Implanted Venus Ports: Overview & Access for Use program is designed to provide Nurses and post-graduate nursing students with an overview of implanted venous ports.  Often referred to as a “VAD”, the venous port is a common vascular access device that may be implanted in patients who will need long-term infusions.  Chapter 1 of this program provides an overview of the port design, the variety of ports and types of access needles available, and reviews the proper procedure for accessing an implanted venous port.  Chapters 2 & 3 demonstrate the actual port access procedure on real “live” patients, and includes methods for port assessment prior to access, factors to consider when selecting needle length, sterile field set-up, and proper stabilization of the port for needle entry.  A demonstration of needle removal (de-access) of an implanted venous port is also discussed and demonstrated.

Included in this program is a live recorded audio/slide presentation (50 minutes in length); and videos of 2 live implanted venous port access (and de-access) demonstrations (32 minutes total); and a downloadable Implanted Venous Ports: Overview & Access for Use workbook (12 pages containing an additional 20 minutes of independent study/reading).
