Introduction to Small Business Entrepreneurship

Course Description:

Participants in this class will start with a basic business idea that they will mold into a legitimate brand.  A business plan will be designed.  The class will cover, but will not necessarily be limited to exploring areas of setting up, finances, niche, marketing, internet presence, management, taxes, and liabilities.  Participants will leave the class with their products and services researched for profitability, a knowledge of the local market and competition, a basic business plan, balance sheet, profit and loss statement, internet presence, business cards, and a good sense of direction to kick start their business.


Synopsis of Learning:  

In class, participants will be taught through lecture and whole group discussion.  Students will be given a project assignment, starting in the first session, to begin creating and documenting their own progress toward starting a business.  (The business can be hypothetical or real).

Out of class assignments will include computer research, interviews with business owners, and interface with business organizations, government entities, partners, and investors.


Who would benefit from the class:

Anyone thinking about beginning or ready to start a small business of any kind.  


Supplies needed for class:

  • A 3-prong pocket folder or some other means to present hard copy documents in class
  • A thumb drive
  • Access to internet for research outside of class
  • A small business idea


Learning Type:  Project Based, Hands On; Elements of Lecture, Whole Group Discussion, and independent research, study, and project participation.
