This 32-hour IV Therapy Education Program (often referred to as “IV Certification”) will provide nurses and post-graduate nursing students
with a basic knowledge of IV therapy practice. This program meets the 30-hour IV therapy education requirement set forth in the Florida Administrative Code (Title 64B9-12) for the “Administration of Intravenous Therapy by Licensed Practical Nurses” in the State of Florida It includes all the required content and mandatory hands-on practice
We encourage Registered Nurses to complete the program as a refresher; or as a primer for new RN’s.
This course must be followed by supervised practice in the clinical setting to verify clinical competence, which is the responsibility of each employing institution as per Florida Administrative Code (Title 64B9-12).
This course is comprised of 28-hours of online content followed by a 4-hour simulated IV Skills Lab. Content includes current standards of practice, a venous access device review (including 4 hours of central line education), venipuncture techniques, IV medication administration and fluid management, a review of nutritional solutions, management of difficult IV insertions, legal aspects and vascular access protocols.
Online Program Format:
IV Skills Lab:
- 20-hours of video lecture (with PowerPoint slide presentation) given by Kay Coulter, RN, CRNI, VA-BC
- Video of a live peripheral IV catheter insertion demonstration
- Video of 2 live implanted venous port access (and de-access) demonstrations
- A printable workbook (100+ pages) containing an additional 8 hours of independent study / reading
- Post Test following each chapter

After completing the online portion of the program, students will attend an IV Skills Lab where they will receive in-person, hands-on simulated training from a qualified instructor. There will be a question and answer session related to the online content, a peripheral IV catheter insertion / IV medication and fluid administration procedure demonstration, a central venous catheter dressing change / blood draw procedure demonstration, and hands-on simulated skills practice and observation.
NOTE: All IV Skills Labs are held at the SPC Clearwater Campus.
The online course MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ATTENDING THE IV SKILLS LAB.
Student MUST SHOW PROOF OF COMPLETION of online program or they will NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE IV LAB.
Refunds / Transfer Policy:
A student may transfer to another IV Skills Lab up to 2-weeks prior to the date that they initially registered for. Transfer requests must be emailed to: Washington.Terry@spcollege.edu
