Who May Attend This Course:
Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP), which refers to those healthcare workers who are trained to function in a supportive role by providing patient care activities as delegated by an RN or physician, but are not licensed to perform “nursing” tasks; they are trained and certified, but not necessarily licensed. Examples of unlicensed assistive personnel that may attend this program include: Certified Medical Assistants, Certified Nursing Assistants, Patient Care Technicians, Dialysis Technicians, Anesthesia Technicians or Technologists, Phlebotomists, and Emergency Medical Technicians.

This 11-hour IV Therapy Certificate Program (often referred to as “IV Certification”) is designed to provide Medical Assistants and other Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) with IV therapy instruction proven to achieve quality IV practice, improve patient/client outcomes and prevent liability risks. It includes 7-hours of online instruction / independent reading and a 4-hour simulated IV lab / hands-on skills practice session.
An introduction and overview of current IV therapy practice, including national standards and guidelines related to IV therapy, legal aspects, a comprehensive review of current peripheral venous access devices and the insertion procedure, site care and maintenance recommendations, special considerations for geriatric and pediatric patients, and considerations related to IV fluid administration.
This program is comprised of a 4.5-hour video/slide presentation given by Kay Coulter, CRNI, VA-BC, a video of a live peripheral IV catheter insertion demonstration, a printable workbook and supplemental reading (that provides an additional 2.5-hours of course material), a post test following each chapter, and a 4-hour simulated IV lab / hands-on skills practice session. An IV lab kit will be provided.
IV Skills Lab:
This selection is for the IV Certificate for Assistive Healthcare Personnel 4-hour IV Skills Lab, at which students will receive in-person, hands-on simulated training from a qualified instructor. There will be a question and answer session related to the online content, a peripheral IV catheter insertion / IV fluid administration procedure demonstration and hands-on simulated skills practice / observation. An IV lab kit will be provided.
This course must be followed by supervised practice in the clinical setting to verify clinical competence, which is the responsibility of each employing institution.
NOTE: All IV Skills Labs are held at the SPC Clearwater Campus.
The online course MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ATTENDING THE IV SKILLS LAB.
Student MUST SHOW PROOF OF COMPLETION of online program or they will NOT BE ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE IV LAB.
Refunds / Transfer Policy:
A student may transfer to another IV Skills Lab up to 2-weeks prior to the date that they initially registered for. Transfer requests must be emailed to: Washington.Terry@spcollege.edu
